How the heck are you supposed to hold that up to your ear for any length of time?

    No thanks.

I guess they were thinking of people using their hands... Its proven quite popular on every other phone.. though i suppose you could try wrapping tape round your head.

I'd prefer a clean modern OS with usability first and foremost.

Who says they haven't? Maybe the iCal developers are so solidly done that they are dinking around with skins now?

And out of curiousity, what does a "modern OS" look like anyway? Is there some standard or generally accepted look for that? Or perhaps by "modern" you mean "not done before" ? I'm honestly curious about the answer to this.

    Screw the gratuitous eyecandy

Eye candy that gets in the way of functional is stupid. Otherwise, as long as I can modify it, I couldn't care less.

Great. Really screwed a lot of the world on pricing. In the UK, we have 20% VAT, but that doesn't mean that Apple should then scrape an additional 200 on top of this thinking users won't notice.

And don't just say it's more expensive. They are all manufactured in China.

    Okay, let's work it through.

Base iMac is $1,199 and 999. $1,199 is currently 727 in a straight conversion. So let's see:

    727 * 1.20 = 872.40 (VAT)
    727 * 1.08 = 58.16 (Additional cost of doing business in UK)

    872.40 + 58.16 = 930.56

    Difference: 68.44

Now I can never remember how this works but I *think* there's an additional 3.5% import duty which would account for a further 25.45 which brings the extra cost down to 42.99, or just about 6% of the US price. Considering Apple also have to allow for currency changes that's hardly a rip off.

this sounds very interesting and futuristic. i wonder how you click, or make a selection. it would be pointless if you could scroll wothout touching the screen, but had to touch it in order to click on the scroll wheel.
    im excited though! sounds cool!

I can see how simple gestures could be recognized as the various clicks that you would normally do, so I don't think this would be an issue.

Wait what ? Apple's complaint had multiple utility patents, design patents, trademark infringement claims and trade dress claims. That's pretty broad, not specific.

It also levied these complaints at the many different phones in the Galaxy line-up. The media is only comparing 1 model, the Vibrant/i9000. There are many models included in the complaint, including the Captivate, the Nexus S and the Epic 4G. Yet as shown on this page, you'd be hard pressed to mistake them for a 3GS like the media claims.

Apple's complaint isn't specific and it isn't about a specific model at all. That is why you guys need to look beyond the simple pictures you've seen on Apple biased media. At this point, this could go either way, could get reduced, etc..

Also, the patents Samsung is suing over are quite important as they relate to reduced power usage during data transmission, something we all know Apple values profoundly in their designs. There's 10 patents in all. Like Apple, Samsung is defending their IP. Anyway, like stated many times, this lawsuit and now the counter-suit is just a negotiation tactic by both corporations. Don't worry too much about it and don't try to get into emotional arguments over it, in the end, it doesn't concern us the consumer.

Why not just let him have his emotional argument? Why do you have to correct him or specify anything? If it doesn't concern the consumer (us), why not just let the issue be regardless of what one person or another has to say. This is a forum, a place to voice opinion, nothing more. If you wanna hear your right or you have strong arguments, okay yep.

Here is my question with the market....

A year ago, when Apple was at 80 and the iPhone and all the new products had been announced, I figured everyone knew how great these products were going to be and had already inflated the price of the stock to a high 80. So, I decided not to buy.... well, as we know, the stock rose over 200. Everyone bought much later on.

So, does this translate to: In a market that I know a lot about and believe in, even though new product news is out, before profit/financial news it out, should I still buy?
(Yes, I am relatively new at this... flame on)
It just drives me nuts, that I knew things were going to do well, and thought everyone already knew and had bought.

Sadly, Vegas will cost you more for a week than SF (if you want to do it "right").

And doing San Francisco "right" is close if not more. At least in Vegas you have massive competition for your entertainment dollar. San Francisco entertainment venues is this strange, cabal like maze of approval processes with some social engineering objective hidden from the public.

Hotels, restaurants and other "substance" costs are a hell of a lot cheaper in Vegas than in San Francisco. I did Vegas for less than a grand in a week last summer just to see how far I could stretch my dollar. I ended up with free rooms, free food, complementary shows and spent my money on what matters -- booze, guns and women!

Could someone clarify this for me: Aren't hard drives too slow to make use of Thunderbolt anyway? In a typical USB 2.0 external hard drive, what is the bottleneck in speed: The speed at which the hard drive spins, or the USB 2.0 connection? If it's the USB, then why do people even care about the RPM of a drive? If it's the RPM, then isn't USB 2.0 fast enough to run a hard drive at its native speed?

Look forward to thunderbolt hub. USB 3.0, esata and a DisplayPort daisy chain.

What he said. You can get adaptors for different things, plus daisy chain multiple devices together. One device may not be able to use the whole TB bandwidth, but if you add a bunch of accessories to the same port, it'll add up. Right now, the only single device that might be able to utilize the whole bandwidth would be a RAID array and other high-end stuff. But as SSDs come more common & speed up, we'll see TB being more useful. This definitely won't happen overnight, no matter how much some of us might hope.

If apple got their dual-band world phone out a year earlier, for all carriers, it would have made a huge difference!!!! I can't believe apple is delaying the iPhone 5!!!!!!!!!!

I am not apple, so I am probably wrong, but delaying the IPhone 5 seems like the worst business decision ever!!!!!!!!!

The iPhone 5 better be a major upgrade that makes it better than all the other devices out there, and better be on all carriers!!!!

They have the number 1 and number 2 top selling smartphones out there.

Bringing out the iPhone 5 now would be a mistake when you are sitting at the top of the heap with your current hardware.

So you push it back a bit and make the devices even better, giving you an even bigger advantage in the next generation.

Imagine the iPhone 4 sitting in the 3GS position a year from now. It will be amazing you can get a phone like that for the price it will be available for...

The android handset makers don't jump up and down with glee because Android has more overall users. It is not good for any of them individually. In fact it is bad for them.

    This is the important part:

Apple's iPhone 4 ranked as the top-selling mobile phone in the U.S. during the quarter, and perhaps most surprisingly, the iPhone 3GS took second place in the rankings. Despite essentially being a nearly two-year-old device . . .

    That speaks volumes.

.....About the the mentality of the people who buy a two year old phone just so they can say they have an iPhone.

    Finally they released it.

For those of you complaining about price. I have yet to see a bluetooth mouse for less than $45 and most are in the $70 range. Yes, wired and RF you can get cheap but Bluetooth is expensive. The price is exactly what I was expecting.

What was an 11 year old doing that required this app? I bet pressed download just for the thrill of it and when it started downloading he freaked out.

Yet another reason (of many) that kids should not be given expensive electronics to play with. I blame the parents for giving the kid an iPod touch in the first place. I am perfectly satisfied with my $29 MP3 player that I bought on sale last month.

I searched and shockingly couldn't find a thread like this. I don't know about anyone else but this is when I start my Christmas shopping. So, what do you want [realistically] this year for Christmas? Don't forget to include your pictures! And no, it doesn't have to be limited to Apple products.

All I want is this beautiful piece of engineering:
