hmm.. I don't like the look of the calendar. I prefer the simple look as it is in Snow Leopard. I hope there is option to switch it to that look.

In the mean time, might get the white one for my girl, she's still on my old 3G and it hurts me to see her still using that thing.

just because a new device is out doesn't mean your old one dosen't work anymore / you suddenly need it..

Give me some wise decision guys

I am badly in need for a new iDevice. My last device was the iPod Touch 1st Generation. I am planning to get both the iPhone and iPad, but will only get one now and wait for the other one in the next update.

    So which is better now?

Get iPhone 4 White, and wait for iPad 3
    or
Get iPad 2, and wait for iPhone 5?

I am leaning towards the first option because the iPhone 4 feels like a revolution while the iPad 2 feels like a small upgrade and I wish it has a retina screen. But on the other hand, the iPhone 4 feels old now and iPad 2 just released.

badly in need of something and you don't even know what you need? iphone and ipad are two completely different things...

seriously, it really seems people buy apple eyes closed, without even thinking about their (supposed) needs. if you want to be cool, and you can afford it, then it's ok, otherwise you're just victims of the advertising and rumoring.
didn't want to offend anyone, just want to make people think a bit before spending their money.

What Microsoft is trying to prevent is running a data center off one copy of Home Edition. You would do it by buying an 8-core computer then installing one copy of Home edition and then VMware and then running a dozon virtual machiones each with another copy of Home Edition installed. What Microsoft is saying now ios that in order to do this you need to buy the "Big Bucks Edition" of Vista.

Should get32/33 mins per frame, something else must be slowing it down. Could be the raid, spotlight, check the activity monitor. Keep HT on.

oh wow. now that's a huge difference. something's gotta be wrong then

Your sarcasm is inappropriate. This poster has a right to her/his opinion. There are plenty of folks that think that kids are a bad idea, especially in their case. I'm proud of the fact I don't have kids: I'd beat them just like Joan Crawford did in Mommy Dearest.

You sound like a wonderful human being.

I always love to bring that up at those Mcdonalds debates.

Personal responsibility means making informed decisions, and you can't make an informed decision if the information isn't available. I think that restaurants like that should make nutritional info easily available. That, and quit advertising unhealthy food in ways that imply that it is healthy.

Maybe a sign of universal iOS+Mac apps?

It wouldn't be too difficult for Apple to provide something like Rosetta for iDevice apps. It sounds extremely un-apple though. The only reason Apple provided Rosetta was to ease the PowerPC-Intel transition. I don't think there is any real benefit here because many iDevice apps would not translate well to a mouse and keyboard. It's possible that new iOS apps would have a "mac mode" that would solve this, so who knows.

No, nay, never... nay, never, no more! (sung with an Irish lilt). TV = mass-produced low-margin market that is focused primarily on price and specs. Exactly the kind of market that Apple avoids like the plague.

Of course there is. iOS runs on two currently available Apple smartphone models: 3GS and 4. The iOS that runs on these phones is sufficiently different in feature sets from the iOS that runs on Tablets, media consumption devices, and Apple TVs:
    -Larger resolution on tablets
-Communications handled separately - No phone app or visual voicemail on Tablet or iPod Touch
-No installable apps on Apple TV

I think you already understand the differences. You just would like to lump everything together so that it seems that Apple still has dominant marketshare.

Pretty disingenuous use of statistics, if you ask me..

You are honestly trying to act as if slight hardware and software features and differences make it a completely different platform, regardless of whether or not it has an effect on applications? Seriously? That's like saying Android devices from different manufacturers can't be lumped together because of different resolutions or skins.

EDIT: Also, I was only mentioning that AppleTV technically runs iOS, not that it should be officially be counted.

The only thing disingenuous is to try and compare an entire platform against a single device in a platform and call it fair.

    Hi
    1) I don't see the right / left clicking complaint to be valid. It does work differently than a three peice ( two button / rest of shell ) mouse but all it takes is some getting use to. It isn't a design flaw, as far as my opinion goes

    2) The scroll ball is a design flaw to an extent but not overly difficult to fix. It simply gets 'greasy' from hand oils, ... Normally using "just enough" rubbing alcohol on a cloth or paper towel and [vigorously] rolling the MM upside down on it with the scroll ball cleans and dislodges any "gunk" buildup. Tedious and one shouldn't have to do it but I've never seen a mouse that stays perfectly clean with 'normal' use.

It wouldn't make sense for the iPhone 5 to have the same design as the iPhone 4. Think about it. You have two great phones out now, the iPhone 4 and the new white iPhone 4. Apple's main goal is to make money. With that many phones sold, would it make more sense to sell another phone that looks exactly the same as the one many people have or give them something completely new to upgrade or buy off contract to?

Last quarter... people were buying iPhones at a rate of over 200,000 per day. It doesn't matter what they look like... or what time of year it is... Apple will sell iPhones.

Even if the iPhone 5 looks the same but has upgraded hardware inside when it comes out in September... someone will buy it just like someone bought the iPhone 4 from January to March.

Do you have to upgrade to a new model every year? No.

But somebody is always ready to buy a new phone.

BTW... the 3G and 3GS looked the same... and that did OK.

Was thinking more of a desktop touch screen device. Different from the iPad which wants to be picked up and used, but is workable on your lap. This mythical desktop touch device would still need to be light enough that you could lift it up and just change it's orientation at will like an iPad. Yet with a stand so it could be standing upright in portrait or landscape yet moved and sit anywhere down to almost flat on the desk. That way if you want the screen upright you can have, yet small enough that your not putting it to far away and for the odd navigation touch command would not be to bad. Yet lying down you get the full advantage and directness of touch screen.

I do get the picture — this concept of 'best of both worlds'. But I think the reality wouldn't be quite as great as you imagine. Mouse input and touchscreen input are quite different things, and you'd be asking developers on this platform to support both with their apps in order for things to work whether the user has the device upright with a mouse plugged in, or horizontal for touchscreen input as you describe. Otherwise the user would be constantly expected to switch between the two for different tasks, and that would make it a nightmare to use.

You mention in there that the 'odd navigation touch command would not be too bad' on a vertical screen, and that may be true. If that is your only expectation, that's fine. So what you probably have in that case is still a Mac running Mac OS X, but with a touchscreen capable of supporting certain touch commands and gestures. Of course, Macs are already capable of supporting various multi-touch gestures through a touchpad (or Magic Mouse or whatever), so it's conceivable that they could add a touchscreen as well, to be used occasionally as the need arises, but I'm not convinced that is going to offer the Mac a whole lot more functionality or that it would justify a whole new marketing name.

See the other part that seems to missing is something that has the directness of touch but and doesn't obscure what your doing like a mouse so you get the accuracy, but you can't do this at the expense of the other input means on there respective platforms. Or in other words a stylus but it has to work with fingers as well but not spongy like the current ones you can buy.

Adding a stylus to the iPad for certain tasks is fine IMO, and far more natural than switching between a real keyboard and touchscreen. Unfortunately, Steve Jobs made that comment which has been interpreted as 'stylus = fail', so you're not likely to see Apple encouraging that any time soon.

To me the keyboards a red herring, both OSX and iOS can use either real or on screen keyboard.

Sure, the iPad can use a real keyboard, but when you do, it really isn't the same experience that makes the iPad special anymore. It's a compromise in order to salvage some of what makes a desktop machine feel more precise, and that's my point — it feels like a compromise between both platforms, not a new and superior experience. The iPad really shines when you're touching it, because that's what it was designed for.

Yeah okay, so Apple released iWork for the iPad just to show us that they could. I won't be buying it though. It's not what the iPad excels at.

It's funny for all the advantages of computers it's only now we see them becoming as intuitive as pencil and paper some time in the next 5ish years.

I think the iPad is already pretty much there when it comes to ease of use (depending on which apps you're using of course). That's why the in-store hands-on display is so effective — anyone from age 3 through to 103 can pick one up and start using it straight away.

Sometimes less is more, and I think that is probably true of touchscreen interfaces, and why the iPad has hit the mark where Windows-based tablet PC's failed in the past.

As for why they split off iOS as a branch, well where now five years in and only with Lion is it looking like the two will align.

People look at the superficial similarities between Lion and iOS and think the two are merging into one OS. I see it differently. Time will tell.

Excuse me for the lack of picture, but there is nothing I could use... My last purchase is my inscription to university :) First choice is Computer Engineering, second choice Computer Science (or is it? If I translate literally it would be Software Engineering, but that doesn't seem to exist).

This is great news. If the macbooks go Core 2 Duo then I will have a very difficult decision to make. Regardless I'm going to hold for about 3 weeks to see how these things work out for everyone. If they are, for the most part, problem free then I'm all over this.

Interesting point. I'm sure the Department of Justice would love to know about any contact between Labels and Amazon in the past few months.

If Amazon wanted to sell their content, why would they not have contact to come to an arrangement? Why is this improper?

It's based on demand. If it's still popular its more expensive - no matter how old it is.

That is what I thought, however the 1st post was written to imply that most older content was at the 0.99 price point. This is just not what I've been seeing. If its popular, no matter the time in the iTunes store, its 1.29, aside from any limited time promotional deals.

Apple will make new iPods but only with limited new features (maybe a true video iPod, maybe nintendo games) but when the zoon is realeased Apple will realese the MP3 player to end all MP3 players. It will be announced the day be fore the zoon is out then be realese a week later and it bwill have EVERYTHING that we want-- and more. Cell phone thouch screen/ non-touch, pda, widescreen, an IDE for developers. EVERYTHING. And that is that.

And what is up with the name? "Zune" sounds like microsoft tried to access their inner teen (oh wait, all these poeple never had childhoods) Sounds like microseoft tried to make a 'hip' name. and just like the XBOX put a random letter in front of something everybody already knows (but yet another hitch in the plan what the hell is a "une")

Agreed. Who in their right mind would buy this? I don't care when the iPhone 5 comes out - I've stuck with my 3g for this long, I'm not going to cave now and get an iPhone 4 - even if it is white. It's all about contracts. If I'm going to be stuck with something for 2 years, it had better be the best available at the time of purchase.

Personally, although I really like Apple, I hope that iPhone 4 sales tank in the next month or two. 1 year and 3 months is too long to have the iPhone 4 be your flagship phone product - especially when you don't communicate it to your customers. But, knowing my luck, sales will take off when they don't announce anything in June. :(

9 To 5 Mac's discovery is quite interesting as it shows that this is a recent and updated iPhone with an A5, rather then an old iPhone 4. Maybe the new iPhone 5 will bring some more carriers for the Americans, help slow the loss to Android?
